Only larvae are capable of digesting solid food. After the food has been digested, the food in its liquid form will be transferred back to the worker ants and then distributed throughout the colony.

The process of food exchange is also known as trophallaxis. This behavior is very important because it can be exploited in ant control through baiting, which is exactly how Pesso Eco Ant Bait works
